an old friend
some things, some cars are more friend than object. i struggle with this FJ40. i have known her for more years than not. acquired in the 70s, abused extensively through the 80s and 90s and finally somewhat restored at the turn. she represents an enduring vision of the family Payne, an old warhorse, a trusty, yet somewhat finicky friend, there when you need her, usually, and always ready to grant a feeling of freedom associated with an escape, to town, wherever.
i've worked on her since returning to aspen. she needed help after my father inadvertently did some damage, the kind of damage inflicted by someone losing their faculties. she has become a symbol of my reconstruction efforts. slowly, with patience, and partly out of a desire to create something lasting out of the stay that is drawing to a close. one day i'm sure i will be forced to decide whether to inherit this trusty steed or let her go the the highest bidder. i shall try to assume responsibility as i have done as the oldest of three in this trying time.
i shall sleep well my dears. goodnight sachiko, wherever you are lovely one.
